Volunteer Background Clearances

1) Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (Free for volunteers)

Applicants can also go to the Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History website and apply for their criminal record check online with the Pennsylvania State Police at: https://epatch.state.pa.us/Home.jsp Click “New Record Check” Volunteers Only

2) ChildLine (Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance through the Department of Human Services) (Free for volunteers)

Child Abuse History Clearance Online:  https://www.compass.state.pa.us/CWIS

Creating an account and submitting your clearance application online will give you immediate access to your results or the status of your results if your results cannot be processed immediately.

FBI clearance NOT required if volunteer has been a resident of PA continuously for the past 10 years

3) FBI Criminal Background Check (fingerprint check) for federal criminal history records ($21.50)

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services is utilizing IDEMIA to process fingerprint-based FBI criminal background checks. The fingerprint based background check is a multiple step process. For more information and to begin the registration process, go to

Carlisle CARES depends on volunteers like you to staff the shelters, our resource center and assist in various functions and events. Your commitment to help the homeless in Cumberland County will ensure that all people in our community have a safe, warm place to stay when they need it.

As an overnight volunteer, you will stay overnight at the church with the guest with another volunteer.

Training is provided.

Resource Center Volunteer

A resource center volunteer assist in preforming office duties including answering the phones. Volunteers will also assist the guest as needed. Training is provided.

Are you an expert at something? If so we could use your help! A professional volunteer is someone who volunteers their time and talents to help CARES accomplish a goal. It might be helping fix a broken cabinet or it could be providing your expertise to the finance committee, the possibilities are endless! In addition, you may also help check-in the guest at the overnight shelter.
